Tracked the gaze of HMD users across 360° video to analyze how gaze distribution changes with immersion.

Comparing gaze distribution between content rated high and low for immersion via questionnaire:

  • The higher the immersion, the more gaze concentrates at the center of the screen
  • Among the factors driving immersion, the audio of the content carries substantial weight
  • The shape of the gaze distribution itself differs by content subject

Reviewing the experiment also surfaced the need for research on recognizing specific objects in a VR environment.
